At times, you may try to install a Role on server remotely, and it that fails it could be due to number of reasons. In this scenario, I’m going to share my experience I had when the Remote Desktop Services failed to install remotely on a Server 2012.

Issue: Getting the following error message when installing RDS remotely.

Unable to connect to the server by using Windows PowerShell Remoting

Analysis: You get this error message when you try to connect to the Server under the Add Roles and Features Wizard for Remote Desktop Services. As earlier said, this may happen due  a number of reasons, however this solution is out of the box. The Remote Shell is configured with 150 MB by default. This particular environment has IIS App Pool on the server and hence the available memory was not sufficient to create a remote session. This would also apply if you have SharePoint running on that server.

Solution: Create the following Registry Keys and reboot the server. This worked for me, hope will work for you too. Ensure that you backup your registry before making any changes to it.

Under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters

Value: MaxRequestBytes

Type: DWORD

Data: 65564 (Decimal)

Under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters

Value: MaxFieldLength

Type: DWORD

Data: 65564 (Decimal)

Reboot the server, and voila, we are able to connect to the server.
